Actual Softball RPI numbers this week
Below are the actual RPI numbers from the NCAA today.
Whether you like RPI or not, it remains a huge tool that the Selection Committee uses to seed and select teams for the NCAA tournament.
Traditionally, the Top 16 teams host a 4 team Pod in their own stadium, but this year is NCAA has announced that they will select those 16 host schools sometime next week (2 weeks early) because of the additional planning needed to handle the Covid precautions.
Matt Larsen, NCAA DI Softball Committee Chairman, indicated on a Podcast last week that "a lot of the same rules still apply with regards to bracketing," which would seem to indicate that RPI ratings and strength of schedule still matter as do wins against Top 25, Top 50 and Top 100 Teams.
Consequently, Hokie fans want Duke and Clemson to remain in the Top 25 and Louisville to slip into the Top 50. Heck, it wouldn't hurt if NC State and UNC crept into the Top 100.
Needless to say, remaining in the Top 16 is important to VT's chances to host. Since the Hokies are currently at #15, this weekend series with Notre Dame (RPI #32) is very, very important.
Overall, VT's resume looks good at the moment, and at least one "bracketologist" has the Hokies as a host school. Tech has an RPI of 15, a strength of schedule ranking of #38, and a win-loss record of 7-3 versus Top 25.
Just win, baby.
